Were you ever confused about the difference between all the pumpkins, squashes, and gourds? Here is an answer:

All squashes and pumpkins belong to the genera Cucurbita. The common name for Cucurbita is squash.

When you use the common name squash there is the simple division of :

· summer squashes (such as zucchini) which are harvested and eaten at a young stage in the summer,

· winter squashes (such as pumpkins, butternuts, etc), which are harvested and eaten at a mature stage in the fall,

· gourds which are harvested in the fall, but they are usually to hard to eat.

Pumpkins are a winter squash. So what is the difference? Here is a simple rule:

The genus Cucurbita is divided into species:

· Cucurbita maxima

· Cucurbita moschata

· Cucurbita pepo

· Cucurbita mixta

· Cucurbita argyrosperma

There is one more group of gourds which is a different genus.      The gourds used sometimes as birdhouses are Lagenaria siceraria. We grow the Bule, Speckled Swan and Serpente di Sicilia.
